Family Night (by Pam)

Family Night (by Pam)

People will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. Luke 13:29

Friday night at our house is a much anticipated event. On Fridays, Steve has the day off, and the kids don’t have homework or school the next day. Even I let go of household chores long enough to enjoy what has become know in our home as “Family Night.” All the mountains of wash on Monday, the school work load on Tuesday, the endless errands on Wednesday, and the tedious tasks on Thursday can be endured with a count down to Friday.

Steve enjoys creating in the kitchen and loves looking for new recipes on the internet. This past Friday he spent several hours searching sites, shopping, and then cooking to give us a restaurant quality meal at a family budget price. When I got home from school, there were bags of groceries on the kitchen counter, and he was methodically peeling shrimp, and peering at the computer screen. As he shared his ideas for the evening, I became impressed with all the time he had spent thinking about what the family liked and preparing to treat us.

Soon the kids came clambering in off the bus calling, “Yeah! Daddy’s home! What are we doing for Family Night?”

I replied, “Wait until you see the feast your Daddy is preparing for you!”

As I said those words, I was reminded about how my Heavenly Father is getting ready for our much anticipated Family Day. All the mundane tasks, heartaches, unanswered questions, and overwhelming pressure can be endured knowing “That Day” is coming. In John 14:6 Jesus shares a glimpse of what is going on behind the scenes… “In my Father’s house are many rooms…I am going to prepare a place for you.” A place made especially for me by the one who created me and knows me intimately. The gospels and the book of Revelation promise a lavish wedding reception to rival any banquet or Thanksgiving buffet you’ve ever tasted before.

We can’t even begin to imagine how great it’s going to be. “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him (1 Corinthians 2:9).” Instead of just one night at the end of a busy week, we’re going to spend the next million years with the One who unconditionally loves us.

“Oh, and just wait until you see the feast your Daddy has prepared for you!”
