God Owns It All

God Owns It All

The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it. Psalm 24:1

According to the U.S. National Debt Clock, the outstanding debt of the United States of America is $11,961,148,562,917.80. It increases by 3.6 billion dollars every day. The current indebtedness for every man, woman and child who lives in the USA based on this projection is $38,944.63. Such is the legacy of spending money you don’t have.

God doesn’t have that problem. He owns it all. Every stick of wood, every blade of grass, every flower, every tree, God owns it. There is not a square inch of real estate on this planet (or the universe, for that matter) that exists without the sustaining power of our Creator. In fact, the Bible goes one better. God also claims ownership over every living creature on the earth, wherever they may be. We belong to God too. Our time, life and breath, our abilities- these too are gifts from God. God reminds us… “You may say to yourself, ‘My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.’ But rememberthe LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth.” (Deuteronomy 8:17-18). So much for self-sufficiency!

This sure changes our perspective on generosity. Actually, God is the generous one. He is the one who unsparingly gives us all things for our enjoyment (1 Timothy 6:17). Every moment I have, every dime I
spend (or save), every relationship I enjoy, the very air I breathe is a gracious gift from God who owns it all.

This knowledge is the foundation and wellspring of generosity. Because God is the source of EVERYTHING, I can be generous. After all, it is all God’s to begin with!
