Rain

Rain

You heavens above, rain down righteousness; let the clouds shower it down. Let the earth open wide, let salvation spring up, let righteousness grow with it; I, the LORD, have created it. Isaiah 45:8

All right, so I’ve been soaked to the skin three times today.

I ‘m still at the church and it’s 10:45 at night. It’s absolutely pouring outside (again) and I’ve got to get to my truck that is parked way out in the parking lot. My umbrella, of course, is in the truck. Soaking #4 is just around the corner! A smart man would have carried an umbrella with him all day, but I’m… (you can finish the sentence for me.)

Somehow, I missed the weather report that said that the remnants of tropical storm Nicole would drop 6 inches of rain on Bristow.

Pouring rain kind of describes my week. Have you ever had a week like that? You can’t seem to get ahead, one mishap

follows another, one unpleasant task after another and you never even get to your overflowing to-do list. Compounding all of this is the tragedy of several untimely deaths that have struck our community and affected so many of the people I know and love. It has been an emotionally exhausting week. Sometimes we go through days when it’s nothing but rain, rain, rain.

It’s tough to see God at work when it rains. When life gets stormy, I’m reminded that we live in a world that is scarred and twisted by sin. There’s a cosmic battle between good and evil raging and planet earth is the battlefield. Human lives are in the balance. The kingdom of God is advancing, but the opposition is strong, and we see much evidence of the wreckage created by the enemy of our souls. Our hearts are grieved, and we are tempted to give up hope.

But one day…

One day God’s kingdom will come in its fullness. God will wipe every tear from our eyes, the curse of sin will be lifted, and the enemy will be destroyed. Every wrong will be righted, Righteousness will pour down like rain and wash away every Injustice. The lame will walk, the blind will see, the deaf will hear, and the dead will be raised.

When I think of these things, I find hope. So may the rain remind you that a better day is coming.

You heavens above, rain down righteousness; let the clouds shower it down. Let the earth open wide, let salvation spring up, let righteousness grow with it; I, the LORD, have created it.
