Thirsty
Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb… Revelation 22:1
The Amazon River is an amazing river. It is over 4,000 long (the distance from New York to Rome) and 1/5 of all of the fresh water in the world flows within its banks. The total water flow of the Amazon is greater than the next eight largest rivers combined. Fish thrive in the Amazon, one variety reaches 15 feet long and weighs over 400 pounds.
At flood stage so much water flows into the Atlantic Ocean at its headwaters that a bubble of fresh water extends out over 100 miles from the shore. The 8 trillion gallons of fresh water that flow daily out of the Amazon river literally washes the salt water out of the way.
The story is told of a group of early Spanish sailors who approached the continent of South America after a long and arduous voyage. They reached an expanse of water so wide the sailors assumed it was a continuation of the Atlantic Ocean, when in fact the water was the fresh water of the Amazon. With no land in sight and their water supplies exhausted several men died of thirst. They were sitting right on top of the largest quantity of fresh water on the planet, but since they expected the water to be saline, they never thought to drink.
As believers in Christ, we have an even greater resource. Jesus said, “whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. (John 4:14).”
Jesus is the only one who can quench your deep inner thirst. Sadly believers often try to quench their thirst with the salt water of this world, but it only brings disappointment and death. All around us people dig wells and drink polluted water that can never really satisfy (Jeremiah 2:13).
Drink deeply of Jesus. Refresh yourself with the water He provides. The living water is close at hand.
